We introduce the paradigm of hybrid planning, which is particularly suited for applications where plans are not intended to be automatically executed by systems, but are made for humans. Hybrid planning combines hierarchical planning – the stepwise refinement of complex tasks – with explicit reasoning about causal dependencies between actions, thereby reflecting exactly the kinds of reasoning humans perform when developing plans. We show how plans are generated and how failed plans are repaired in a way that guarantees stability. Our illustrating examples are taken from a domain model for disaster relief missions enforced upon extensive floods. Finally, we present a tool to support the challenging task of constructing planning domain models. The article ends with an overview of a wide varity of actual planning applications and outlines further such in the area of cognitive technical systems.}, tags = {SFB-TRR-62,Planning}, url = {http://www.springerlink.com/content/514981j48161127x/fulltext.pdf}, web_url = {http://www.springerlink.com/content/514981j48161127x/}, DOI = {10.1007/s00287-011-0562-7}, author = {Biundo, Susanne and Bidot, Julien and Schattenberg, Bernd} } @article{RefWorks:532, minne ={update}, author ={Hady, Mohamed Farouk Abdel and Schwenker, Friedhelm and Palm, G{\"u}nther}, year ={2011}, title ={Multi-view Forest: A New Ensemble Method Based on Dempster-Shafer Evidence Theory}, journal ={International Journal of Applied Mathematics and Statistics (IJAMAS): Special Issue on Soft Computing and Approximate Reasoning}, volume ={22}, number ={S11}, pages ={2--19}, url ={http://ceser.in/ceserp/index.php/ijamas/article/view/255} } @inproceedings{RefWorks:501, minne ={update}, author ={Glodek, Michael and Bigalke, Lutz and Palm, G{\"u}nther and Schwenker, Friedhelm}, year ={2011}, title ={Recognizing Human Activities Using a Layered HMM Architecture}, booktitle ={Machine Learning Reports, New Challenges in Neural Computation (NC2)}, chapter ={05}, pages ={38--41}, url ={http://www.techfak.uni-bielefeld.de/~fschleif/mlr/mlr_05_2011.pdf#page=41} } @inproceedings{RefWorks:502, author ={Glodek, Michael and Bigalke, Lutz and Schels, Martin and Schwenker, Friedhelm}, year ={2011}, title ={Incorporating Uncertainty in a Layered HMM Architecture for Human Activity Recognition}, booktitle ={Proceedings of the Joint Workshop on Human Gesture and Behavior Understanding(J-HGBU'11)}, publisher ={ACM}, pages ={33--34}, url ={http://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=2072584} } @inproceedings{RefWorks:504, minne ={update}, author ={Glodek, Michael and Scherer, Stefan and Schwenker, Friedhelm}, year ={2011}, title ={Conditioned Hidden Markov Model Fusion for Multimodal Classification}, booktitle ={Proceedings of the 12th European Conference on Speech Communication and Technology (Interspeech'11)}, publisher ={ISCA}, pages ={2269--2272} } @inproceedings{RefWorks:511, minne ={update}, author ={Schels, Martin and Schillinger, Patrick and Schwenker, Friedhelm}, year ={2011}, title ={Training of Multiple Classifier Systems Utilizing Partially Labeled Sequences}, booktitle ={Proceedings of the 19th European Symposium on Artificial Neural Networks (ESANN'11)}, pages ={71--76}, url ={http://www.dice.ucl.ac.be/Proceedings/esann/esannpdf/es2011-80.pdf} } @inproceedings{RefWorks:517, minne ={update}, author ={Schmidt, Miriam and Palm, G\"{u}nther and Schwenker, Friedhelm}, editor ={Hans A. The more complex applications become, the more time-consuming and cost-intensive it will be to build suitable user interfaces. Automatic model driven approaches are seen to produce relief. Present techniques offer automation of the UI-generation, but not for the entire process. The automation is hard to be integrated into developers' current workflows, because they often require special modeling languages. Our approach is based on the Cameleon Reference Framework and relies on UML as basis for the UI-generation process. The way of modeling can be easily applied without further practice. We show that is possible to derive different platform specific GUIs from a single UML model. spoken language dialogue systems there are many ways for modeling dialogues. The dialog model’s particular structure depends on the algorithm used to interpret it. In most cases a dialogue’s model is quite difficult to understand and to create. We present a novel technique for modeling dialogues based on ready to use open source tools in an easy and understandable way. Making use of our approach a dialogue designer (unfamiliar with the internals of the dialogue manager) can simply develop even complex and adaptive dialogues. The dialogues are then ready to be interpreted by the dialogue management in order to integrate them seamlessly into the spoken language dialogue system.} } @INPROCEEDINGS{2011su01, author = {Ultes, Stefan and Schmitt, Alexander and Minker, Wolfgang}, month = {Aug}, title = {Attention, Sobriety Checkpoint! Only within the last decade, research has moved to data-driven methods leading to statistical models. But still, most dialog systems make use solely of the spoken words and their semantics, although speech signals reveal much more about the speaker, e.g. its age, gender, emotional state, etc. Using this speaker state information - along with the semantics - can be a promising way of moving dialog systems towards better performance whilst making them more natural at the same time. Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes (POMDPs), a state-of-the-art statistical modeling method, offer an easy and unified way of integrating speaker state information into dialog systems. In this contribution we present our ongoing research on combining a POMDP-based dialog manager with speaker state information.} } @INPROCEEDINGS{Bertrand2011_09, author = {Bertrand, Gregor and Nothdurft, Florian and Minker, Wolfgang and Walter, Steffen and Traue, Harald}, month = {09}, title = {Adapting Dialogue to User Emotion - A Wizard-of-Oz study for adaptation strategies}, booktitle = {Proceedings of the Paralinguistic Information and its Integration in Spoken Dialogue Systems Workshop}, year = {2011}, publisher = {Springer}, location = {Granada (Spain)}, pages = {285--294}, doi = {10.1007/978-1-4614-1335-6_28}, part = {6}, abstract = {In Spoken Language Dialogue Systems (SLDS) there is a growing trend to make the system act more human-like to render the dialogue more agreeable for the user. One of the methods to achieve these system qualities is to take into account the way that the user is feeling and to react appropriately. However, it is not clear what appropriate means in this context. What is the system to do when sensing a specific emotion? Is the appropriate reaction user-dependent? Situation-dependent? Context-dependent? Is the appropriate reaction dependent on the complex process of neurotransmitters circulating in the brain system of the user at the moment of the reaction? In order to address some of the questions above we conduct a Wizard-of-Oz study based on the findings of a preliminary study. We are collecting data about different kinds of users that are put in a cognitively demanding situation. We try to find out relations between different types of users and different types of system strategies that address their emotional state.} } @INPROCEEDINGS{honold2011b, author = {Honold, F. and Sch{\"u}ssel, F. and Weber, M. and Bertrand, G. and Nothdurft, F. and Minker, W.}, title = {Ein Goal-basierter Ansatz f{\"u}r adaptive multimodale Systeme (Poster)}, booktitle = {Mensch und Computer 2011}, year = {2011}, address = {Chemnitz}, month = {September} } @INPROCEEDINGS{honold2011, author = {Honold, Frank and Poguntke, Mark and Sch{\"u}ssel, Felix and Weber, Michael}, title = {Adaptive Dialogue Management and UIDL-based Interactive Applications}, booktitle = {Interact 2011, Workshop: Software Support for User Interface Description Languages}, year = {2011}, address = {Lisbon}, month = {September} } @article{BoueckeEtAl2011, author = {Bouecke, Jan D. and Tlapale, Emilien and Kornprobst, Pierre and Neumann, Heiko}, title = {Neural Mechanisms of Motion Detection, Integration, and Segregation: From Biology to Artificial Image Processing Systems}, journal = {EURASIP Journal on Advances in Signal Processing}, volume = {2011}, year = {2011}, pages = {6:1--6:22}, articleno = {6}, numpages = {22}, publisher = {Hindawi Publishing Corp.} } @ARTICLE{RaudiesEtAl2011, author = {Raudies, Florian and Mingolla, Ennio and Neumann, Heiko}, title = {A Model of Motion Transparency Processing with Local Center-Surround Interactions and Feedback}, journal = {Neural Computation}, year = {2011}, volume = {23}, pages = {2868--2914} } @Article{myOwnJournalArticleNeumann3, author = {Beck, Cornelia and Neumann, Heiko}, title = {Combining Feature Selection and Integration - A Neural Model for MT Motion Selectivity}, journal = {PLoS ONE}, year = {2011}, volume = {6}, number = {7}, doi = {10.1371/journal.pone.0021254} } @ARTICLE{Biundo11CognitiveSystems, author = {Biundo, Susanne and Bercher, Pascal and Geier, Thomas and M{\"u}ller, Felix and Schattenberg, Bernd}, title = {Advanced User Assistance Based on {AI} Planning}, journal = {Cognitive Systems Research}, year = {2011}, volume = {12}, pages = {219--236}, number = {3-4}, month = {April}, note = {Special Issue on Complex Cognition}, doi = {10.1016/j.cogsys.2010.12.005}, issn = {1389-0417}, keywords = {Cognitive technical systems, Companion-technology, Hybrid planning, Plan repair, Plan explanation, Real-world planning}, url = {http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/B6W6C-51TGG9K-1/2/4f8891da44f7fbe776d553396911a589} } @INPROCEEDINGS{Elkawkagy11LandmarkStrategies, author = {Elkawkagy, Mohamed and Bercher, Pascal and Schattenberg, Bernd and Biundo, Susanne}, title = {Landmark-Aware Strategies for Hierarchical Planning}, booktitle = {Workshop on Heuristics for Domain-independent Planning (HDIP 2011) at ICAPS 2011}, pages = {73--79}, year = {2011} } @INPROCEEDINGS{Geier11HybridDecidability, author = {Geier, Thomas and Bercher, Pascal}, title = {On the Decidability of HTN Planning with Task Insertion}, booktitle = {Proceedings of the 22nd International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI 2011)}, year = {2011}, pages = {1955--1961} } @incollection{springerlink:10.1007/978-3-642-21616-9_67, author = {R{\"o}sner, Dietmar and Friesen, Rafael and Otto, Mirko and Lange, Julia and Haase, Matthias and Frommer, J{\"o}rg}, affiliation = {Department of Knowledge Processing and Language Engineering, Otto-von-Guericke University, Magdeburg, Germany}, title = {Intentionality in Interacting with Companion Systems An Empirical Approach}, booktitle = {Human-Computer Interaction.
