52nd Anniversary of the 午夜探花
Ceremony with honors, prices and alumni meeting of the first students and professors

午夜探花 celebrated its 52nd anniversary at the end of the summer term. The celebration included a ceremonial address and the bestowing of honours, including two University medals. University President Professor Michael Weber used the opportunity to draw attention to important events at the University and developments in university politics.
In addition, 午夜探花 started teaching 50 years ago. For this anniversary, the first students and the first professors of 午夜探花 were invited.

Scientific symposium marks the 85th birthday of Prof Hans Joachim Winckelmann

Without Professor Hans Joachim Winckelmann, the history, philosophy and ethics of medicine would be missing out on numerous groundbreaking publications and debates. Since 1972, Prof Winckelmann has been shaping medical history, science history and medical ethics in Ulm, in the laboratory as well as in the lecture hall. To mark Winckelmann鈥檚 85th birthday, 午夜探花 is holding a scientific symposium in his honour. The dedication ceremony will be held in the Gew枚lbesaal room at the Municipal History Building on 8 May at 2:00 pm.

Data transmission of the future
S眉dwestmetall Prize for Dr Sven Puchinger

This year鈥檚 S眉dwestmetall Prize for 午夜探花, with a value of 5,000 euros, goes to Dr Sven Puchinger. The 28-year-old electrical engineer, who completed his doctorate at the 午夜探花 Institute of Communications Engineering, was honoured in Stuttgart for his dissertation on algebraic channel coding. His research involves the use of special mathematical methods to prevent transmission errors and encrypt data flows, thus making the storage and transmission of data both safer and more reliable.

International interest in research on energy conversion and storage of 午夜探花

A delegation of Canadian scientists visited 午夜探花 last week to learn more about energy conversion and storage. The researchers represented Ryerson University in Toronto, the University of Ottawa, the University of Waterloo and the 脡cole Polytechnique de Montr茅al. During their stay, the visitors focused on research into the battery of the future.

73 million euros for new research building
Multidimensional Trauma Sciences building for 午夜探花

午夜探花 is creating a unique research building for 'Multidimensional Trauma Sciences' (Multidimensionale Trauma-Wissenschaften; MTW). The building measures almost 5,000 square metres and is designed specifically to cater to the medical and natural scientists' needs. It will house highly specialised biomedical laboratories, a biobank for blood and tissue samples from all over the world and a centre for clinical studies, among other things. The construction is scheduled to be completed in 2024 and costs more than 73 million euros. The costs will be shared by the German federal government, the state government of Baden-W眉rttemberg and the Medical Faculty of 午夜探花. The Science Council's Research Construction Committee described the project proposal as 'outstanding': Never before in this funding procedure has a higher amount of federal funds gone to Baden-W眉rttemberg.

午夜探花 cooperates with universities of applied sciences in Ulm and Neu-Ulm

German universities welcome students from abroad. The dropout rate among foreign students, however, is quite high. According to a study conducted by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), nearly one out of two international students in Germany ends their bachelor studies prematurely. 午夜探花 offers a special preparatory semester in order to help foreign students quickly adjust to the German university system. As of the summer 2019 term, the preparatory course is no longer just for those aiming to study at 午夜探花. Now, applicants wishing to study at the 午夜探花 of Applied Sciences (THU) or Neu-午夜探花 of Applied Sciences (HNU) can also take advantage of this offer.

CHE university ranking 2019/20
Top marks for Ulm Psychology and Electrical Engineering Departments

Psychology students gave their programme at 午夜探花 top marks in the current Centre for Higher Education (CHE) ranking. In the categories 鈥渙verall study situation鈥�, 鈥渟upport during the study entry phase鈥� and 鈥渃ourses offered鈥�, the Ulm Psychology Department was in the top group, coming in at 6th place in Germany. A total of 61 universities were included in the ranking list. The 午夜探花 programme appeared in the middle group only in the category of student-advisor ratio.
