However, these tools are not specifically designed for tutoring. Positive tutoring experiences rely on interaction with and immediate feedback from the tutor. Moreover, traditional methods like writing, reading, and drawing in physical spaces enhance learning outcomes. Integrating these methods with physical materials and digital remote guidance could improve remote learning experiences. A technology that enables this integration is spatial augmented reality (SAR), which utilizes projection to integrate digital content into the physical world. This work introduces a Spatial Augmented Reality (SAR) remote tutoring tool that enables augmented annotations and projected video streams. We conducted a between-subject lab study (N=18) comparing learning experiences in remote tutoring between standard video conferencing tools and the introduced Spatial Augmented Reality (SAR) tool. Qualitative analysis revealed the Spatial Augmented Reality (SAR) system’s benefits over video conferencing, specifically immediate feedback, in-situ annotations, improved interactivity, and enhanced social presence.}, year = {2024}, month = {12}, day = {2}, reviewed = {1}, DOI = {10.1145/3701571.3701577}, journal = {MUM '24: Proceedings of the International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Multimedia}, publisher = {ACM}, pages = {255 - 263} } @Article { VRCreatIn, author = {Drey, Tobias and Rixen, Nico and Karlbauer, Julian and Rukzio, Enrico}, title = {VRCreatIn: Taking In-Situ Pen and Tablet Interaction Beyond Ideation to 3D Modeling Lighting and Texturing}, abstract = {Mixed reality (MR) in-situ authoring has demonstrated advantages for 3D content design regarding perception, understanding, and accessibility, satisfying the growing demand for MR content in industry, education, and entertainment. However, existing MR tools mostly focus on ideation and sketching, making further steps such as 3D modeling, lighting, and texturing not sufficiently researched yet. This research gap raises the need to explore end-to-end 3D content creation workflows in MR environments. We introduce VRCreatIn, an all-in-one virtual reality (VR) solution for 3D content creation informed by expert interviews (N=6) and a design space analysis. It pioneers an integrated multimodal workflow through all stages of 3D modeling, lighting, and texturing based on pen and tablet interaction. Our usability walkthrough (N=10) confirms that VRCreatIn transfers the benefits of pen and tablet to the whole content creation workflow, broadening the scope of 3D content creation in VR. These contributions pave the way for future research, establishing VRCreatIn as a cornerstone for comprehensive 3D design in VR environments that can be transferred to the whole MR continuum.}, year = {2024}, month = {12}, day = {2}, reviewed = {1}, DOI = {10.1145/3701571.3701580}, journal = {MUM '24: Proceedings of the International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Multimedia}, publisher = {ACM}, pages = {24 - 35}, web_url2 = {https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YU1WljMbNWY}, file_url = {t3://file?uid=524075} } @Phdthesis { 420671485355_2023, author = {Drey, Tobias}, title = {Towards Mixed Reality in Education: Overcoming Challenges of Teaching, Learning, and Authoring}, type = {Dissertation}, year = {2023}, month = {12}, DOI = {http://dx.doi.org/10.18725/OPARU-51635}, organization = {Îçҹ̽»¨}, booktitle = {Dissertation}, journal = {Îçҹ̽»¨}, publisher = {Îçҹ̽»¨} } @Article { 115402643320_2023, author = {Drey, Tobias and Montag, Michael and Vogt, Andrea and Rixen, Nico and Seufert, Tina and Zander, Steffi and Rietzler, Michael and Rukzio, Enrico}, title = {Investigating the Effects of Individual Spatial Abilities on Virtual Reality Object Manipulation}, status = {1}, year = {2023}, month = {4}, DOI = {https://doi.org/10.1145/3544548.3581004}, journal = {In Proc. of CHI 2023 (SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems)}, publisher = {ACM}, address = {New York, NY, USA}, web_url2 = {https://youtu.be/5nitNnpFocM}, file_url = {t3://file?uid=476332} } @Article { SpARklingPaper, author = {Drey, Tobias and Janek, Jessica and Lang, Josef and Puschmann, Dietmar and Rietzler, Michael and Rukzio, Enrico}, title = {SpARklingPaper: Enhancing Common Pen- And Paper-Based Handwriting Training for Children by Digitally Augmenting Papers Using a Tablet Screen}, status = {1}, year = {2022}, month = {9}, reviewed = {1}, DOI = {https://doi.org/10.1145/3550337}, journal = {Proceedings of the ACM on Interactive, Mobile, Wearable and Ubiquitous Technologies (IMWUT)}, volume = {6}, publisher = {ACM}, chapter = {113}, series = {3}, pages = {1-29}, web_url2 = {https://youtu.be/iYGCJtrQIZY}, file_url = {t3://file?uid=459599} } @Article { CollaborativeLearning, author = {Drey, Tobias and Albus, Patrick and der Kinderen, Simon and Milo, Maximilian and Segschneider, Thilo and Chanzab, Linda and Rietzler, Michael and Seufert, Tina and Rukzio, Enrico}, title = {Towards Collaborative Learning in Virtual Reality: A Comparison of Co-Located Symmetric and Asymmetric Pair-Learning}, status = {1}, year = {2022}, month = {5}, reviewed = {1}, DOI = {https://doi.org/10.1145/3491102.3517641}, journal = {In Proc. of CHI 2022 (SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems)}, publisher = {ACM}, web_url2 = {https://youtu.be/\_m32zfsjWcY}, file_url = {t3://file?uid=453912} } @Article { BeingStuck, author = {Drey, Tobias and Fischbach, Fabian and Jansen, Pascal and Frommel, Julian and Rietzler, Michael and Rukzio, Enrico}, title = {To Be or Not to Be Stuck, or Is It a Continuum?: A Systematic Literature Review on the Concept of Being Stuck in Games}, year = {2021}, month = {9}, reviewed = {1}, DOI = {10.1145/3474656}, journal = {Proc.
