While prior work dominantly focuses on exploring performances of augmentations, this work aims to understand the societal impact of AR in complex social situations. Focusing on prosocial helping behaviour, we created two scenarios and designed five augmentations aiming to motivate a user to help. We wanted to understand (1) the impact on situation perception and (2) the impact on the social structure. In an online video experiment (n=294), we found that augmenting can impact anxiety about the situation and significantly increase the perceived reason to help being directed towards the augmentation. Similarly, we found that the helped rated the \dqreason\dq and \dqthankfulness\dq significantly higher towards AR than the helper, creating a disagreement around agency and responsibility. While prior work has shown that augmenting social situations with faithful personal information can benefit a conversation, honest mistakes or an attempt to deceive might lead to a dissonance between augmentation and verbally disclosed information. In this work, we take the first steps towards understanding the happenings in case of information dissonance by conducting a preliminary within-subject online video study (N=30), investigating how it affects users, perception of the interlocutor, and if augmentation or interlocutor would act as the more trusted instance. We found that only 26.7{\%} trusted the interlocutor’s verbally uttered information, while a majority believed the AR device (46.7{\%}) or were undecided (26.7{\%}). To augment objects in the real world, AR HMDs require a three-dimensional understanding of the scene, which is currently solved using depth cameras. In this work we aim to explore how 3D gaze data can be used to enhance scene understanding for AR HMDs by envisioning a symbiotic human-machine depth camera, fusing depth data with 3D gaze information. We present a first proof of concept, exploring to what extend we are able to recognise what a user is looking at by plotting 3D gaze data. To measure 3D gaze, we implemented a vergence-based algorithm and built an eye tracking setup consisting of a Pupil Labs headset and an OptiTrack motion capture system, allowing us to measure 3D gaze inside a 50x50x50 cm volume.
